2019 International Convention

Jul. 6, 2019 (SALT LAKE CITY) — The 2019 BHS International Convention in Salt Lake City is now history. We witnessed some of the best singing and highest scores of all times. It was a truly remarkable event, with an amazing field of competitors across the board.

Congratulations to SIGNATURE, our 2019 International Quartet Champions, to THE NEWFANGLED FOUR for your TOP TEN finish, to THE WESTMINSTER CHORUS for your GOLD MEDAL, to ECLECTONES for medaling in the Varsity Quartet Contest, and to ALL the quartets and choruses who crossed the stage this year. Congratulations also to DR. JIM HENRY, our 2019 inductee into the BHS Hall of Fame.

The Far Western District had a strong representation at the BHS International Convention this summer in Salt Lake City. Including the two Next Generation Varsity competitors, there were SEVEN quartets and TWO choruses from the FWD that crossed the stage at the LDS Conference Center.

Craig Hughes, FWD President, posted this summary on our Facebook page earlier today.

Earthquake - I hope all are ok after last night’s earthquake. Please let us know if the District can help in anyway. I too experienced an earthquake 700 miles north in Salt Lake City. The Westminster Chorus shook the Barbershop world with the highest scoring set in International history. They were amazing from the start of Justin Miller’s arrangement of “I’ll Be Here” to the jaw dropping “From Now On/Come Alive” from the Greatest Showman.

I watched rehearsals of the Vocal Majority, the Ambassadors of Harmony and Westminster this week and was struck by the dedication and hard work all three put into their minutes on stage. The AoH were incredible and the story they told was heart felt. VM was so good - true Champions. Then there was Westminster and Justin Miller. The connection between the Chorus and Director is unique. They work, play and breathe together. They share the same soul. They regrouped after the contest to celebrate and the love was palpable. They then put on a memorable show for friends and family.

It was great to see so many “old” faces in the Chorus. 100 men to include College and International Quartet Champs and some charter members from their founding in 2002. We in the Far West are so lucky to have shared the beginnings of the Westminster story and there is so much more to be told. I can’t wait.

Among the many accolades posted to our Facebook page, Robert Shelton had this to say about THE NEWFANGLED FOUR:

Huge respect to any quartet who sings first in quartet finals, but takes those final prep moments to sing the chorus acceptance package. #champsdeliver
