Jan 26, 2019 (NASHVILLE, Tenn.) – The Barbershop Harmony Society’s 2019 Midwinter Convention concluded this evening at Nashville’s world-famous Grand Ole Opry House. There were numerous events held at the six-day event that was headquartered at the Gaylord Opryland Resort, including AHSOW, Harmony Platoon, Harmony University classes, and even a blood drive.

Major events included chorus and quartet competitions for youth and seniors, and the Far Western District was represented by both generations. Here is a summary of these events with respect to our FWD competitors.

Next Generation Junior Quartet Contest

The Junior Quartet Contest was held Thursday afternoon at the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville. Quartet Quin-Tones from the Mid-Atlantic District took top honors, followed by Singing Double from the Sunshine District, and Vintage Mix from the Land O’ Lakes District.

The Far Western District was well represented by three of the fifteen quartets who competed. Two quartets, Belle Voix and The Barbershop Darlings, were from Chandler High School in Arizona, and both received Excellent ratings. The third quartet was The King’s Crooners from Riverside, California who received a Superior rating.

Next Generation & Seniors Chorus Invitational

The Dixie District Seniors Chorus is the 2019 International Seniors Chorus Festival Champion, receiving a Superior rating and had 72 men on stage. The Far Western District did not have a representative in this competition.

Flipping ahead a few generations, the Far Western District was well represented at the Next Generation Junior Chorus Invitational on Friday at the Grand Ole Opry House. The Chandler High School Men’s Choir from Chandler, Arizona competed with 39 men on stage in the Plateau AA division, and received an Outstanding rating. The Chandler High School Treblemakers, also from Chandler, Arizona competed with 41 women on stage in the Plateau AAA division, and received a Superior rating. Lori Lyford, who is also the director of the Scottsdale Chorus, 2019 Sweet Adelines International Chorus Champion, directed both choruses.

BHS International Seniors Quartet Contest

There were 24 quartets who crossed the stage Saturday afternoon at the Grand Ole Opry House. DoubleDouble from the Ontario District captured the International Seniors Quartet championship, followed by Let’s Sing from the Carolinas District, and Hearsay from the Johnny Appleseed District. The Far Western District was represented by R.I.C.K.S. – Dave Wallace, Steve Leipelt, Corley Phillips, Richard Lund – who finished 23rd in the contest.
